Student Nomination Comments About What They Found Beneficial :

  • “Her use of Canvas was very clear and easy to use. She is very open to us contacting her over canvas over absolutely anything. She also has multiple samples that we can look at if we don’t understand the assignments.”

Student identified “best practices” of Canvas use that you do:

  • Frequent grade entry
  • Extensive use of comments/ feedback on assignments
  • Use of Inbox to communicate
  • Use of Announcements to respond to student posts
  • Use of Discussions to respond to student posts
  • Posting of all assignment material/ directions. info
  • Use of Assignment Due Dates
  • Structured Student-student discussion forum responses
  • Use of submitting assignments online
Brief summary of how you implement/ have setup any of the above that you selected?

“I have found the use of discussion boards to be a great way to have students interact with each other outside of the classroom. It is a way for students to get to know each other better while sharing something interesting. At the beginning of the semester I have them start off simply by writing about a discourse community they belong to, including special language unique to that group. They read each others and get to know each early on in the class. Another discussion board I set up is a follow-up for visual rhetoric. 1. Go to Google images and find an ad (someone else will analyze it…all you have to do is share the ad) 2. Find one of your classmates ads and answer the following questions: a. what human need does the ad appeal to? b. what marketing technique is used? c. how does it catch your attention? 3. Whoever shared the ad will read your analysis and give you feedback. So, this will turn into a 2 way conversation between you and one of your classmates. Should be fun! I try to set up 5 discussion boards a semester. At the beginning of the semester I give all of my students 50 participation points. They can keep them all if they participate in all the discussion boards. If they don’t participate they lose points. Most keep all 50 points for the semester!”

What is at least 1 other specific Canvas practice beyond those mentioned above that you do/ have done and believe has helped student success & retention in your courses?

“On the first day of class I have my students set up Pinterest accounts. I have them upload 5-6 pictures or images to create a board where they introduce themselves to the class. In the middle of the semester, I have them create another board to present their argument paper. At the end of the semester they create a third board to present their research paper.”
