WHAT IS IT?
Canvas is the standard online platform that NC State uses to support all NC State classes. While specific usage will vary from class to class, Canvas allows you to access grades, assignment information/submission, calendar of class assignments/events, interact with classmates via Discussions, download/access course materials 24/7 as well as a way to contact your instructors. All NC State Fully Online or Hybrid courses utilize Canvas for all of the above. –

WHAT IS MY LOGIN?
username = first 5 letters of last name + first initial + middle intiial +2-digit birth month +2-digit birth day
(For example: Jessica Ann Monroe, with a birth date of September 8th username = monroja0908)
Default password = first initial + last 4 of SSN + last initial –
WHERE DO I GO AFTER I LOGIN?
When you first login to Canvas, you will be at your personal Dashboard with updates on all your courses since you last logged in as well as upcoming assignments. Clicking on a particular announcement or discussion will take you to that course site in canvas. You can left-click “Courses” to return to this page at any time. To go to a specific course site, mouse over “courses” and you will get a menu of all classes you are currently enrolled in that have been made available to students. HOW DO I NAVIGATE A SPECIFIC CANVAS COURSE SITE?
When you go to a specific course site in canvas, you will have a Course menu on the left hand side to take you to specific tools/areas your instructor has made available. As you click one of the options on the course menu, the main content area will change. Additionally, for each area in the Canvas course site, the right hand Sidebar column will change to give you options/tools for that particular area. The course menu will remain on the left no matter where you go in the course site. Navigational “breadcrumb” links will appear along the top of the content area to allow you to move up a level as needed.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY PERSONAL NOTIFICATION SETTINGS?
Canvas is very flexible in allowing you to be notified of updates/activity in Canvas across a wide range of means and services from alternate email to text message (note: standard text messaging rates for your phone service plan apply) Facebook, twitter or other web services. By default Canvas will only send some standard event notifications to your NCSTUDENT email account. To add other notification means or customize which specific events you want notified where, in the top right of the Canvas window, click the “Settings” link. You can then add additional emails, contact methods or services. Then click the “Notifications” link on the left-hand side to specify what notifications you want to get where. – HOW DO I ACCESS MY COURSES CALENDAR?
Click the “CALENDAR” link at the top of your Canvas screen. You will then find an electronic calendar showing all assignment and course event dates your instructors have entered. Tip: You can add your Canvas Calendar feed to any standard Electronic Calendar system such as the free Google Calendar, iCal, Outlook etc. by clicking the “Calendar Feed” link at the bottom right of the Canvas Calendar screen. You will then get a link you can copy and paste into any of the calendar systems above.

HOW DO I ACCESS MY GRADES?
Click the “Grades” Link on the top bar of your Canvas window to view all grades instructors have entered in Canvas for you. You can click on specific courses to view inidvidual assignment grades, grading rubric scoring etc.

HOW DO I VIEW/SEND MESSAGES TO/FROM MY INSTRUCTORS IN CANVAS?
Canvas has a internal messaging system called “Conversations.” To access your Canvas Conversations Inbox where you can view, sort, send and search Canvas messages, click the “inbox” at the top right of your Canvas window.
